Alwāḥ (sing. Lawḥ) = Scriptural “Tablets” or Letters

• L-Khurasani = Letter or Lawḥ (Scriptural Tablet) or letter in honor of Mullā Ṣādiq Muqaddas Khurasanī partially cited in Afnān `Ahd, 101 ADD (some omissions). .  
• L-Salman =  to Shaykh Salmān of the family of `Aṣfūr in text in hand of the Bab and typed in Arabic cited in Afnan, `Ahd-i A`la, 96 (= facsimile in Bāb’s hand and typed text pp. 97-98).
• L-Kunār Takhta = to  addressed to the Shiraz located uncle of the Bāb Hajjī Mīrzā Sayyid `Alī dated 24th Jumāda II 1261 or 30th June 1845. Haykal al-Dīn ("Book of the Temple of Religion") .  Np. Nd.

• Haykal al‑dīn  (“The Temple of Religion”) An Azalī Bābī ed. Based on XX mss. and propbably printed in the mid. 1960s . A very late Arabic work of the Bāb it dates to 1266/early‑mid 1850. It has the form of a compendium of Bābī law in eight wāḥids ("unities"), each except the last having 19 sections or bābs.

Kitab-i Panj sha`n ("The Book of the Five Modes [Grades] of Revelation")

• K. Panj. S = Kitāb-i panj  sha'n.  np.nd.  [Tehran Azali ed. 196?]. Note also that Shu'un-K            indicates Shu`ūn-i  khamsa al-fārsī  (“The Five Modes in Persian) which consists of select Persian  sections of the K. Panj-S.  [1] INBMC 82:78-133.

• K. Rūḥ  = Kitāb al-rūḥ (The Book of the Spirit) is partially extant in at least five mss. :  (1) Haifa IBA (i); (2) Haifa IBA (ii); (3) Haifa IBA (iii); (4) Tehran INBA  4011C: 69-100 +61-173(??) ; (5) Tehran INBA 7005C (nd. 415 Suras) (so MacEoin, Sources,  189). It is referred to by its author, as a'ẓam al-kutub ("the most supreme of books") (see Mazandāranī K-ZH III:44). A few incomplete mss. were made avaialable to me by the late Abu’l-Qasim Afnan which may correspond with the Haifa (BWC) mss. listed above.

Khuṭbas ( loosely “Literary Sermons or Orations”)

As in the Nahj al-balāgha  (Path of Eloquence) and and other writings ascribed to the first Shī`īte Imam `Alī (d. 40/661), khuṭbas formed an important vehicle for the revelations of the Bab from the earleist period. From late 1844  perhaps twenty substantial khuṭbas were written or delivered throughout the period surrounding the Bab's pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina and his return to Persia around mid. June (??) 1845. This is clear from the Kitab al-fihrist (Book of the Index) of the Bab which was written on 15th Jumada II 1261 AH or  June 21st 1845 CE and  various other early writings. First the twelve or so khuṭbas listed in the K. Fihrist in the order given in key mss. (see below) :

 Further Miscellaneous Khuṭbas of the Bāb

 Twelve Khuṭbas of the Bāb are listed as stolen on 11 Safar 1262 = 19^th February 1845 in the Kh-Jeddah of the Bāb. Evidently some of these khuṭbas are not listed in the K-Fihrist which dates to 15^th Jumāda II 1261 = June 21^st 1845, four months or so after the theft.

•  Kh. Dhikriyya = Khuṭba al-Dhikriyya (“Sermon of the [personified] Dhikr or Remembrance”) a section or component of the Ṣaḥīfa al-Radāwiyya ("The Favored [Riḍā'id] Treatise"), written in the middle of the first month of the Islamic year 1262/ 1846, on the 15th Muḥarram 1262 AH or the 13th January 1846 CE.  Ṣaḥīfa al-Radāwiyya or (loosely) "The [eighth Imam] Riḍā'id Treatise". Partial citation of the Arabic text in Afnan, `Ahd-i a`lā,  2000 pp. 472-3 fn. 2 (cf. page 445).  Khasa'il-i sab`a (The Seven Directives).

• Khasa’il-S = (Ar.) al-Shi’ār al-sab`a or (Per.) [Risāla-yi] Khaṣā’il-i sab`a or (Ar.) al-Khaṣā’il al-sab`a. Arabic text cited in a letter of Mullā `Abd al-Karīm Qazvīnī (d. 1268/1851-2) to the eldest or greatest uncle of the Bāb, the Khāl-i A`zam, Ḥajjī Mīrzā Sayyid `Alī (see Ahd-i a`lā, 99). A recension of the origina text is cited in facsimilie in Afnān `Ahd-i a`lā, 99 and typed and summarized by Afnan in ibid, 100. The common Persian title Khaṣā'il-i  sab`a roughly corresponds to the `title’ more given in the singular in the Arabic original, namely al-Shi’ār al-sab`a (`the Seven Customs, Practices’) or (pl.) Lawḥ-i  sha`ā’ir al-sab`a in Persian trans. Risāla-yi / Lawḥ-i / Khaṣā'il-i  sab`a.

Qayyūm al-asmā’  (QA) or  T. Sūra Yūsuf   see below.

Refernces in this work : After the sūrah number the verse number or ms. page number is written after a colon. e.g. QA 1: 3 = surah 1 line or page 3. Verse numbers will also be indicated on the basis of the Bab's statements that each Sūrah of the QA has forty-two verses though this numbering is often difficult to be certain about.

• R. Dhahabiyya = Risāla Dhahabiyya.  (cf. Afnān, 2000:449). INBMC 86:70-98. This work "The Golden Treatise"  of the Bab was written for Mulla Jawād Viliyānī in 1847 CE. It can apparently be found in (1) INBMC  53:157-180; (2) INBMC  86:70-98.

• Risāla furū` al-'adliyya  (“Treatise on the bases of Justice”).      

• [R. ] Khasā’il Sab`a  = Risāla Risāla-yi  Khaṣā'il-i  Sab`a  ('The Treatise of the Seven [Religio-Legal] Directives"). Cited in a letter of Mulla `Abd al-Karīm Qazvīnī, a secretary of the Bab known as al-Kātib  (d. 1268/1851-2), to an uncle of the Bāb known as Ḥajjī Mirza Sayyid `Ali (d. 1852 CE)  in Afnan, 2000, p.100.  An brief, originally Arabic work of the Bāb this text was probably originally entitled [Risāla] al-Shi`ār al-sab`a ([Treatise] of the Seven Admonitions). • R. Nubuwwa  = Risāla fī'l-nubuwwa al-khāṣṣa ("Treatise on the Specific Prophethood [ of Muhammad]"). INBMC 14:385.

• S. Bayn = Ṣaḥīfa bayn al-ḥaramayn (Epistle [written] betwixt the two shrines [Mecca and Medina), CUL, Browne Or. Ms. F 7(9):1-125; TBA. ms. 6007C, 348-413. This Arabic work was in part composed in reply to questions posed by Mīrzā Muhammad Ḥusayn, Muḥīṭ‑ i Kirmānī (a prominent Shaykhī) (d.xxx/xxxx) to whom the Bāb had announced certain claims near the ḥajar al‑aswad (black stone) in the Meccan Ka`ba on the 15th of Dhu'l‑Ḥijja 1260 / December 25th 1844.
•  S. Ja`fariyya = Sāḥīfa-yi Ja`fariyya.  [1] INBMC 98:48-108; [2] INBMC 60:57-154.
•  S. Rada’wiyya = Ṣaḥīfa al-Radāwiyya (loosely, "The Favored [Riḍā'id] Treatise"), was written in the middle of the first month of the Islamic year 1262/ 1846, on the 15th Muḥarram 1262 AH or the 13th January 1846 CE.  The Kh-Dhikriyya is part of this work (see above). • T. Baqara  = Tafsīr sūrat al-baqara, (= Q. 2) INBMC 69: II:1ff or 157-294+377-410. The Tafsir Sūrat al-Baqara (Surah of the Cow) of the Bab is incomplete or unfinished and dates to  1259 AH or Nov- Dec. 1843 some six months before he 'declared his mission' before Mullā Ḥusayn Bushrū'ī on May 22nd [23rd] 1844 CE. This is clear from its occasionally detached prolegomenon sometimes found before the Bab's closely associated Tafslr on the Sūrat al-Fātiha  (Q. 1) on which see below. And other secondary Babi-Baha’I sources (see T-Jadid, 34-9 esp.35; MacEoin, Sources 153ff).

• T. Kawthar = Tafsīr Sūrat al-kawthar (=Q. 108). [1] EGB Coll. Ms. Or. F10 [7]. This Arabic work of approximately 200-250 pages was written during the Bāb's  confinement in Shiraz for Sayyid Yaḥyā Dārābī who came to be entitled Vaḥīd or Wāḥid (the Single, One, Unique) (see Dawn-Breakers,  174-6). A dozen or more mss. have survived (see MacEoin, Sources,  71)
• T. Laylat  = Tafsīr Laylat al-qadr, (Q. 97) [1] INBMC 69:14--21. It has been observed that the Surah of the Night of Power [or `Destiny', `the Decree']  is made up of five verses, comprising thirty words and one hundred and twelve letters (112) letters. The  Laylat al-qadr  mentioned in its third verse is traditionally, historically  identified with the evening of the 26th and / or 27th of the month of Ramadān believed to have been the night on which the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (d. 632 CE). This night is said to have been "greater than 1,000 months" (Q.97:3).
• T. Kumayl    = Tafsīr Ḥadīth Kumayl ibn Ziyād al-Nakhā’ī.  INBMC 53:63-8.
• T. Man `Arafa = Tafsīr ḥadīth man `arafa nafsahu.. INBAMC 14:468-477; [2]   INBMC 40:46-53.
• T. Sūra Yūsuf  = Tafsīr Sūrah Yūsuf (“Commentary on the Sūra of Joseph” = Q.12) also known (among other titles) as the Qayyūm al-asmā’ (“The Self-Subsisting of the Names”). Here QA. refers primarily to ms. [4] which seems to be a good copy of ms. [1] or another very early ms.  Hence mss.  [1]  QA-1261 = An early Haifa ms. dated 1261/1845 deriving from Muhammad Mahdī ibn Karbalā'ī.
